For over 20 years, The International Dermal Institute has pushed the skin care industry envelope to its limits, literally redefining professional excellence and offering skin therapists a unique opportunity to reach their personal best in the process. 

We do it by offering the most challenging and rewarding postgraduate skin and body therapy curriculum available anywhere today, with 38 postgraduate Training Centers worldwide; 19 of which are located in the U.S.

This charge to be the best in postgraduate skin care is lead by our founder, Jane Wurwand.  A native of England and a skin therapist her entire professional career, Jane came to the United States and quickly recognized that the standards for U.S. trained skin therapists was far below the training she herself had received across the pond.

Unlike her two-year, full time training and the time-honored European apprenticeship tradition, undergraduate training in the U.S. was typically four to six months and there was no apprenticeship or mentoring period.  And at that time, skin care was lumped together with cosmetic services as part of the beauty industry, whereas in the United Kingdom, skin care was treated separately and far more seriously.

More importantly, Jane recognized that there was an apologetic nature about skin therapists.  They seemed to feel that because they did not possess university diplomas, they could not command the respect of their friends who had attended college and received training and education in other industries.

In response to this great divide between education, opportunities and confidence of skin therapists in the U.S. versus the UK, in 1983, Jane founded The International Dermal Institute.  And what started as a storefront, one-room classroom is now at the forefront of the evolution of skin care, elevating the respect and success of the skin care industry and the professional skin therapist around the world.

The International Dermal Institute also serves as a “home” to skin care professionals – it is a constant, recognizable place where they can always return to learn the curriculum that’s the best in the industry, be empowered to strive towards limitless personal and professional possibilities, and reignite their passion for skin care with every technique, ingredient and lesson learned!
